A few things you can safely do in the meantime. If you are ever unsure, leave it alone and ask us when you call.
No heat
- Make sure the thermostat is set to Heat and has fresh batteries.
- Check the furnace breaker and the power switch on the unit itself (it looks like a light switch).
- Pull the filter. A clogged filter can shut a furnace down on its own.
- If temperatures are dropping below freezing, open cabinet doors under sinks on outside walls and let those faucets drip.
No cooling
- If you see ice on the copper lines or the outdoor unit, turn the system off at the thermostat. Running it frozen can destroy the compressor.
- Close blinds on the sunny side of the house and run ceiling fans.
- Check that the outdoor unit is not blocked by leaves, grass clippings or a cover.
Water leaking
- Leaking water heater: close the cold water supply valve on top of the tank and turn off its power or gas.
- Dripping furnace or air handler: turn the system off and set a bucket or towels under the drip.
- Move anything you care about away from the water.
Gas smell or CO alarm
- Get everyone, including pets, out of the house right away.
- Do not flip light switches, use the garage door opener, or make calls from inside.
